Lord Gaura ordered, “With extreme caution and unwavering attention, always worship and serve Nityananda as the Supreme Personality of Godhead.” (CB 3.5.106)

● 1. Nityananda Ordered His Own Worship to Raghava Pandita in Panihati
katakshane vasilena
khattara upare
AJNA HAILA abhisheka
karibara tare
(Caitanya Bhagavata 3.5.265)
“Lord Nityananda sat on a throne and ORDERED Raghava Pandita to WORSHIP and bathe Him.”
When Lord Nityananda ordered His worship, then who are we puny insignificant souls to deny the Supreme Lord His own right, and become envious offenders at His lotus feet by saying that Nityananda can’t be worshiped alone and should only be worshiped along with Gauranga or Pancha Tattva?
Actually wherever Nityananda is worshiped alone with sincere devotion, Gauranga comes in a way we can’t see, to witness that worship. This is proved by the fact that the devotees could smell the fragrance of Gauranga’s damanaka flower garland when Raghava was worshiping Nityananda alone in his home in Panihati with a kadamba flower garland.
Thus, the worship of the name and deity of Doyal Nityananda is bonafide and authorized by the scriptures, and Gauranga is always there to witness it.
● 2. To the Extent One Loves Nityananda, He or She Loves Gauranga
je tanhare priti kare
se kare amare
satya satya satya
vipra kahila tomare
(Caitanya Bhagavata 3.6.122)
Lord Gauranga proclaimed to the brahmana: “The extent to which you love Nityananda, that is the actual love you have for Me. This is the truth, truth, and the only truth.”
This verse spoken by Gauranga Himself clearly shows that Gauranga’s worship is actually included in Nityananda’s worship. That is if one is not rejecting Gaura and accepting Him as the Lord of one’s Lord in the mood of Srila Vrindavana dasa Thakura. This is a direct proof of Nityananda’s worship, that worshiping Nityananda is in fact the way to love Gaura in a way which will truly please Him.
Gaura does not feel rejected when we love Nityananda. In fact, He accepts for Himself that love we have for His beloved Nityananda. He knows that we are loving Him through Nityananda. Even direct love is not accepted by Gauranga so quickly.
There were some sahajiya apasampadayas in Bengal who worshiped Nityananda, but rejected Gauranga altogether. Such worship of Nityananda is neither accepted by Gauranga nor by Nityananda Himself. Our Acharyas have made some strong statements warning us about this. But these statements should not be mistakenly used to reject the worship of Nityananda altogether.
The worship of Nityananda by those who worship Gauranga as the Master of their Master Nityananda and not their direct Master is the topmost. The words “amara prabhura prabhu gaura”, “sarve bhave swami nityananda”, and “tanra haiya bhaji gaura” of Srila Vrindavana dasa Thakura in Caitanya Bhagavata are the correct mood.
He states that he will worship Gauranga as the Master of Nityananda after becoming completely Nityananda’s in all respects. In this worship of Nityananda, there is no disrepect or minimization of Gauranga. But in fact Gauranga is worshiped as the Master of our Master Nityananda. So He is respected much more.
● 3. Nityananda is My Master in All Respects
sarva-bhave swami
jena haya nityananda
tanra haiya bhaji
jena prabhu gauracandra
(Caitanya Bhagavata 1.9.231)
Srila Vrindavana dasa Thakura proclaims in the Adi Khanda: “I will make Nityananda my MASTER (Swami) in ALL RESPECTS (sarva bhave) and I will BECOME HIS (tanra haiya). With that mood, I will worship Lord Gaurachandra, not directly.”
● 4. Gauranga is the Master of My Master Nityananda
amara prabhura prabhu
sri gaurasundara
e bada bharasa chitte
dhari nirantara
(Caitanya Bhagavata 1.17.153)
Srila Vrindavana dasa Thakura reveals his mood: “Sri Gaurasundara is the Master of my Master Sri Nityananda. This is my constant hope and faith of attaining Gaura through my Master Nityananda, because I know I cannot directly attain Him.”
● 5. Gaura Instructed All to Worship Nityananda’s Kaupina and the Holy Water from His Lotus Feet
bhakti kari ihana
kaupina vanda’ shire,
maha-yatne iha puja
kara giya ghare. 30
paiya prabhura ajna
sarva bhakta gana,
parama adare shire
karila vandana. 31
(Chaitanya Bhagavata, 2.12.30-31)
Lord Gauranga instructed to all Gaudiyas, “Worship Nityananda’s kaupina and touch it to your heads with great attention and respect in your home. Receiving pieces of this kaupina from Gaura and His direct order, all devotees worshiped Nityananda’s kaupina with the highest love.”
prabhu bale—sunaha
sakala bhakta gana
nityananda-padodaka
karaha grahana
(Chaitanya Bhagavata, 2.12.32)
Lord Gauranga ordered all Gaudiyas, “All devotees, please listen to Me. Please drink the holy water which has washed the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda and worship Him in that way.”
“If you worship Nityānanda Prabhu, it is as good as to worship Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.” (Srila Prabhupada, 7 March 1975, Mayapur)
If Gauranga has expressly instructed all Gaudiyas to worship Nityananda’s cloth and water, how can some say that worshiping Nityananda alone or singing His name alone is displeasing to Gauranga or to Nityananda? Whatever pleases Gauranga, obviously pleases Nityananda also, and vice versa.
● 6. With Extreme Caution, Always Serve Nityananda as the Supreme Lord
eteke haiya tumi
maha-savadhan
nityananda seviha—
JEHENA BHAGWAN
(Caitanya Bhagavata 3.5.106)
Lord Gauranga instructed Raghava Pandita: “With extreme caution and unwavering attention, always serve and worship Nityananda as the Supreme Personality of Godhead.”
This is a direct proof of Nityananda’s worship. It shows that Nityananda can be worshiped as God attain Gaura Radha Krishna and Harinam Siddhi. He does not always have to be worshiped just as a Devotee, Servitor, or Brother of Gauranga. It is not necessary that He should be worshiped every single time only with Gauranga or Pancha Tattva.
amara divitya deha
nityananda chandra
BHAKTI kari seviha
tahara pada dvandva
(Caitanya Bhagavata 3.3.150)
Lord Gauranga instructed Srila Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya: “My self-same second body is Nityananda Chandra. With full BHAKTI serve His lotus feet.”
parama nigudha tino
amara vacane
ami jare janai sei
se jane tane
(Caitanya Bhagavata 3.3.151)
Lord Gauranga continued, “Nityananda (and Nityananda Bhakti) is an extremely deep and close-guarded secret. Only those whom I reveal Him to by My words, can actually know Him.”
Both of these are supreme verses establishi Nityananda Bhakti in the topmost manner. First verse is the direct order to do “Nityananda Bhakti" with the Bhakti word used by Lord Gauranga Himself. By saying "amara dvitiya deha", Gauranga also means that Nityananda Bhakti is the same as My own Bhakti.
And the second verse about Nityananda Bhaktas is even more unique. Just like srila Sarvabhauma asked Gopinath Acharya, "How can you claim that you have received the Lord's mercy?" Gopinath Acharya replied, "Simply because I know Him who He is and you don't".
In the same way, by saying "ami jare janai, se jane tane", Lord Gauranga says that the most fortunate soul who has come to know about Nityananda by some extreme stroke of good fortune and is engaging in His one-pointed Bhakti has already received MY OWN MERCY. So those who do one-pointed Nityananda Bhakti have not LEFT Gauranga but are actually the HIGHEST RECIPIENTS of Gauranga's mercy.
The main problem is that many have never read about Nityananda’s worship from Caitanya Bhagavata. They have only heard and read about only Krishna’s worship as the Supreme Enjoyer or even Gauranga’s worship from Caitanya Caritamrta. So they wrongly think that worshiping Nityananda individually is offensively separating Him from Gauranga or Krishna, which is exactly the opposite of the actual truth.
● 7. Worship Nityananda Chand to Drown in the Bhakti Ocean
samsarera para haiya
bhaktira sagare
ye dubibe se BHAJUKA
nityananda chandere
(Caitanya Bhagavata 1.1.77)
“Those who desire to cross over the insurmountable ocean of material existence and drown deep in the ocean of pure bhakti, must WORSHIP Nityananda Chand.”
How has this oft-emphasized and repeated instruction of Srila Vrindavana dasa Thakura in Caitanya Bhagavata with direct reference to Nityananda’s worship (BHAJUKA) never caught the attention of many devotees and thus not being taken seriously by them? It is mind-boggling how maya has carefully managed to hide Caitanya Bhagavata and thus Nityananda’s worship from so many Hare Krishna devotees in the present times.
● 8. Nityananda is Avatari So Why Can’t He Be Worshiped on His Own
e-saba pramāṇe jāni
nityānanda-tattva-sīmā
sakala sambhave tāṅte,
yāte avatārī
nityānanda-avadhūta —
‘sākṣāt īśvara’
(Caitanya Caritamrita 1.5.126-127, 3.7.20)
“Everything is possible for Lord Nityananda as He is the AVATARI, the source of all incarnations; and also Sakshat Ishvara, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.”
If partial incarnations and Avatars like Rama, Nrisingha, etc. can have Their own kirtans, worship, deities, and devotees; why can’t Their origin Avatari Nityananda have His own? Why is singing His Name being labelled as separating Him from Gauranga? Does worshiping Radha’s picture or deity alone or just saying “Radha Radhe” mean that we have rejected Krishna?
● 9. Worship and Glorify Nityananda Without Restriction
bhakti kari kara
nityananda pada puja
nityananda guna gao
na bhaviyo duja
(Locana dasa Thakura)
Lord Gauranga raised His hands saying: “With great devotion, worship Nityananda’s lotus feet. Sing Nityananda’s glories with one-pointed attention to please Me the most.”
This is a direct instruction to worship Nityananda again from the lotus mouth of none other than Gauranga Himself.
● 10. Not All Can Worship Nityananda Due to Insufficient Spiritual Piety from Previous Births
alpa bhagye nahi
haya nityananda dasa
(Caitanya Bhagavata 2.22.139)
“One who has insufficient spiritual piety from previous births cannot become Nityananda dasa and worship Him.”
This is another direct proof of Nityananda’s worship. There does exist a position like Nityananda das. Neophytes don’t mind worshiping the Lord, but they don’t have the spiritual piety to accept that the worship of His Devotee is actually higher than His Own worship. When they find Nityananda’s worship, they shout that this is a concocted apasampradaya, as they can’t see this truth, because of not been favored by Lord Gauranga Himself.
durapa hy alpa tapasah
seva vaikuntha-vartmasu
yatropagiyate nityam
deva-devi janardanah
(Srimad Bhagavatam 3.17.2)
A similar verse from Srimad Bhagavatam states, “Persons with meager austerity find it very hard to accept the worship and service of pure devotees who are always engaged in singing the glories of the Lord.”
Nityananda is God, Guru, Devotee, and Bhakti personified. Who except Nityananda is the topmost expert in singing the glories of Lord Gaura Krishna and dancing? So both these verses from both the Bhagavatas prove that worship of Nityananda cannot be understood by those who have limited spiritual piety and austerity from their previous lives.
● 11. A Tiny Seed of Envy for Nityananda Keeps the Soul Away from Gauranga Forever
nityanande yahara
tileka dvesa rahe
bhakta haile o
se amara priya nahe
(Caitanya Bhagavata 3.2.260)
Lord Gaura proclaimed, “If one maintains even a tiny seed of envy for Nityananda’s worship, he or she can never ever become dear to Me, even if he or she is My greatest devotee already.”
If we truly love Gauranga then we will follow His orders and do what pleases Him the most, what gives the most joy to His heart. Nityananda’s worshipers are actually the greatest Gaura Krishna Bhaktas, because they truly understand the innermost desire of Their Lord.
● 12. Nityananda is More Important Than Me
mora deha haite
nityananda-deha bada
satya satya sabare
kahinu ei dadha
(Caitanya Bhagavata 3.2.258)
Lord Gaura declared, “The body of Nityananda is more important than My own body. I repeatedly assure you that this is the emphatic truth.”
If one carefully reads Caitanya Bhagavata, then it is practically impossible to not detect how Gauranga Mahaprabhu has been uncompromisingly preaching about taking full shelter of Nityananda’s worship. He has continuously emphasized it on one pretext or another throughout the whole span of His worldly pastimes. In fact, if one notices closely, Gauranga eagerly awaits for an opportunity to establish Nityananda’s worship always to His associates.
● 13. Become Very Serious to Worship Nityananda
sabare shikhaya
gauracandra bhagavan
nityananda-prati sabe
hao savadhana
(Caitanya Bhagavata 3.2.257)
Lord Gauracandra taught everyone, “You should become very attentive, serious, and conscious about worshiping Nityananda.”
● 14. Kala Krishna Dasa Knew No One Except Nityananda
kālā-kṛṣṇadāsa baḍa
vaiṣṇava-pradhāna
nityānanda-candra vinu
nahi jāne āna
(Caitanya Caritamrta 1.11.37)
“The twenty-second devotee of Lord Nityānanda Prabhu was Kālā Kṛṣṇadāsa, who was the ninth cowherd boy. He was a first-class Vaiṣṇava and did not know anything except Nityānanda Prabhu.”
There were two Kala Krishna dasa’s in the lila. The above one is the nitya-siddha associate. He is the personification of Nityananda’s worship as he knew no one else except His Lord Nityananda.
● 15. Hoda Krishna Dasa Knew Nothing Except Nityananda’s Lotus Feet
hoḍa kṛṣṇadāsa —
nityānanda-prabhu-prāṇa
nityānanda-pada vinu
nāhi jāne āna
(Caitanya Caritamrta 1.11.47)
“The thirty-sixth devotee of Lord Nityānanda was Hoḍa Kṛṣṇadāsa, whose life and soul was Nityānanda Prabhu. He knew nothing else except the lotus feet of Nityananda.”
In these verses, it is clearly mentioned that these two associates of Nityananda knew no one else except Nityananda. They were exclusively devoted to Nityananda. Do you think Nityananda, Gauranga, or Radha Krishna were displeased with them? Of course not, as they are the eternal associates of the Lord.
● 16. I Do What Nityananda Makes Me Do. No Difference Between Me and Nityananda.
ei nityananda yei
karaya amare
se-i kari ami
ei balila tomare.
amara sakala karma
nityananda dvare
akapate ei ami
kahila tomare.
yei ami, se-i nityananda
—bheda nai
tomara gharei saba
janiba ethai.
mahayogesvare yaha
paite durlabha
nityananda haite taha
paiba sulabha.
(Caitanya Bhagavata 3.5.102-105)
Lord Gauranga revealed the most confidential secrets of Nityananda’s worship to Srila Raghava Pandita, “I am telling you with full conviction that whatever Nityananda makes me do, I only do that. Without hiding anything from you, I am sharing that all My actions are by Nityananda alone. Let all the people in your home know it for certain that there is no difference between Me and Nityananda at all. That which is impossible to attain by the greatest Yogis is granted to everyone by Nityananda very easily.”
● 17. Nityananda is Ananga Manjari in Madhurya Rasa
Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati in Caitanya Bhagavata 2.12.26 Anubhashya: “Sri Nityananda Prabhu (Nityananda) Sri Varshabhanavira (as Radharani’s) Anujaa-Rupe (Sister) Madhura (Conjugal) Ratira (Love) Poshana (Nourishes) Karena.”
Some devotees think that since Balarama is not there in Madhurya, Nityananda is also not there. They don’t know that Nityananda’s ontological position was raised in Gaura Lila, just like many other associates like Srila Paramananda Puri, etc. So He entered Madhurya Lila as Ananga Manjari, Radha’s younger sister.
And He awards the rarest entry into Rupanuga Radha Dasyam to other souls also through this form of Ananga Manjari as established by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta in the above commentary. Nityananda is always the most merciful in any form He takes in any Lila. He just can’t give up His supremely compassionate nature.
Srila Bhaktisiddhanta also makes it very clear, “Radha accepts the offer of service of ONLY those souls who are SPECIALLY favored by Nityananda and are deemed by Him to be fit for Her service.” (Source: Shrimati Radhika, Associates of Shri Chaitanya)
● 18. Nityanananda is Our Ishtadeva So How Can We Not Worship Him?
isthadeva vandon mora
nityananda raya
caitanya kirti sphure
yanhara jihvaya
(Caitanya Bhagavata 1.1.11)
After glorifying how the worship of the Lord’s devotees is higher than the Lord’s worship, Srila Vrindavana dasa Thakura confirms that he was actually talking about Nityananda’s worship by stating this verse, “First and foremost I offer worship to my Ishtadeva Nityananda Raya, by whose mercy the glories of Gauranga become manifest.”
When we combine this verse with the above statement of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta of how Radharani accepts the service of only those souls who have worshiped Nityananda first and have been specially favored by Him, it becomes very clear that Ishthadeva of every Gaudiya Sadhaka aspiring for any of the five rasas is actually Nityananda Himself.
And Isthadeva means our most worshipable Lord. So how can Nityananda become our most worshipable Lord if we don’t worship Him or if we are against His individual worship? Even Yamuna devi, the greatest devotee of Krishna, had to worship, please, and beg forgiveness from Lord Balarama individually.
Some devotees say that I am already worshiping Nityananda Gauranga by the Sankirtana Yagya, Deity Worship, or by chanting Harinam and the Pancha Tattva Mantra thrice in a day. So I don’t need to worship Nityananda separately. Then how can Nityananda ever become our Ishtadeva and grant us Gaura Radha Krishna if we don’t sing His name and pastimes along with Harinam and thus don’t know anything about Him?
Srila Vrindavana dasa Thakura is showing how we should worship Lord Nityananda as Ishtadeva by devoting not only this whole first chapter of Caitanya Bhagavata, but in fact all its chapters in all the three Khandas, to establishing the supremely merciful glories and pastimes of Nityananda.
Srila Bhaktisiddhanta’s instructions to every new devotee joining Gaudiya Matha was to first get firmly established in the worship of Lord Nityananda by learning Bengali and reading or singing Caitanya Bhagavata 100 times. Thus my parama-gurudeva embodied this instruction of Srila Vrindavana dasa Thakura on how to truly make Nityananda our Ishtadeva.
● 19. Deities of Nityananda or Balarama Worshiped in the Dhams

Above are some of the Deities of Nityananda or Balarama in Lila Sthalis in the Dhams. Thus, we can conclude Lord Nityananda or Lord Balarama can be worshiped on His own also. He is not only the Supreme Personality of Servitor Godhead to His brother Lord Gaura Krishna, but He is also the Supreme Personality of Served Godhead when He is with His own associates.
Nityananda is eternally worshiped with His consorts Jahnava and Vasudha in His own Ekachakra Yogapith as the Supreme Enjoyer. Similarly, Lord Balarama is worshiped with His Purnananda Gopi in Vraja or with Revati and Varuni in Dvaraka. Caitanya Bhagavata describes the Rasa Lila of Balarama in the first chapter.
● 20. Worship of My Devotee is Higher Than My Worship
‘amara bhaktera puja
—ama haite bada’
sei prabhu vede-
bhagavate kaila dadha
(Caitanya Bhagavata 1.1.8)
Srila Vrindavana dasa Thakura makes it clear that his Caitanya Bhagavata is primarily the glorification of Lord Nityananda, the greatest devotee of Lord Gauranga, in its very 8th verse, “The worship of My Devotee is higher than My Own worship. In this way, the Lord emphatically establishes this truth in all the Vedas and Srimad Bhagavatam leaving no room for any doubt.”
ye me bhakta-janāḥ pārtha
na me bhaktāś ca te janāḥ
mad-bhaktānāṁ ca ye bhaktās
te me bhakta-tamā matāḥ
(Adi Purāṇa, Laghu-bhāgavatāmṛta 2.6, and Caitanya Caritamrita 2.11.28)
Lord Krishna declares to Arjuna, “My own devotees are actually not My devotees. Those who are the devotees of My devotees are my topmost devotees.”
So how can Nityananda’s worship be displeasing to Lord Gaura Krishna when He Himself says that the only way to become His devotee is to worship His devotee, not Him directly.
ārādhanānāṁ sarveṣāṁ
viṣṇor ārādhanaṁ param
tasmāt parataraṁ devi
tadīyānāṁ samarcanam
(Padma Purāṇa, Laghu-bhāgavatāmṛta 2.4, Caitanya Caritamrita 2.11.31)
Shiva reveals the greatest of all secrets to Parvati, “O Devi, among all kinds of worship, the highest worship is that of Lord Vishnu. But the worship of Lord Vishnu’s devotees is even higher than this highest worship of Lord Vishnu.”
If the highest worship of the Lord is the worship of the Lord’s devotees, Nityananda’s worship should be the topmost way to please Lord Gauranga. Just like Radha’s worship is the topmost means to please Lord Krishna.
archayitva tu govindam
tadiyanam narcayet tu yah
na sa bhagavato jneyah
kevalam dambhikah smritah
(Padma Purana, Uttara Khanda)
“If one worships Lord Govinda but does not worship His devotees, one is not considered a devotee at all, but simply a hypocrite.”
siddhir bhavati va neti
samsayo ‘cyuta-sevinam
nihsamsayo ’stu tad-bhakta-
paricarya-ratatmanam
(Varaha Purana, Shandilya Smriti, Govinda Bhashya to Vedanta Sutras 3.3.51)
“There is a big doubt whether a direct devotee of the Lord will attain perfection or not. But there is absolutely no doubt whatsoever that the devotee who is engaged in worshiping the Lord’s devotee will attain all perfection.”
tasmad atam-jnam hy
archayed bhuti-kamah
(Mundaka Upanishad 3.1.10, Govinda Bhashya to Vedanta Sutra 3.3.51)
“If one wants the highest benediction in life, one should worship the devotees of the Lord instead of worshiping the Lord directly.”
One of the highest meanings of the Gurvashtakam by Srila Visvanatha Cakravati Thakura is when it is applied to the two greatest Devotees and Jagatgurus of all, Nityananda or Radharani:
yasya prasādād
bhagavat-prasādo
yasyāprasādān
na gatiḥ kuto ‘pi
“Attaining the mercy of Nityananda is to get Gaura Krishna’s mercy. And by not worshiping Nityananda, there is no hope to ever attain Gaura Krishna’s mercy.”
● 21. Prayer to Nityananda to Grant His Own Bhakti
jaya nityānanda-candra
jaya caitanyera prāṇa
tomāra caraṇāravinde
bhakti deha’ dāna
(Chaitanya Charitamrita 3.11.6)
“All glories to You Lord Nityananda. You are the very life and soul of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. My dear Lord Nityananda, kindly grant me in charity the devotional service (bhakti) of Your lotus feet.” (Who says we can’t pray to Lord Nityananda for His own Bhakti, when Srila Krishnadasa Kaviraja has himself prayed to Him for exactly that in Cc.)
● 22. Be Nityananda das to See Gaura
mukheha ye jana
bale “nityananda das”
se avashya dekhibeka
chaitanya-prakash
(Chaitanya Bhagavata 2.28.192)
“Whoever with his or her own mouth says: ‘I am the servitor of Nityananda’, will certainly see Lord Chaitanya face to face.”
● 23. Pray to Gaura to Attain Nityananda’s Worship
dharani-dharendra
nityanandera charana
deha’ prabhu gaurachandra
amare sevana
(Chaitanya Bhagavata 2.28.192)
“O Lord Gaurachandra, please allow me to serve the feet of Nityananda Prabhu, who, as Ananta Shesha, holds all the universes on His heads.”
● 24. Know Vaishnavas and Destroy Offenses by Nityananda’s Worship
nityananda-prasade se
vaishnavere chini
nityananda-prasade se
ninda haya kshaya
(Caitanya Bhagavata, Madhya 22.135-136)
“One understands the devotees only by Nityananda’s mercy. And thus only by His mercy, we can become free of Vaishnava Aparadha and Vaishnava Ninda forever.”
To conclude, worship of Nityananda is the worship of all that is worshippable in creation: the Vaisnavas, the Sastra, the Dhams, the Demigods, Avatars, Vishnu Tattvas, and ultimately Gaura Radha Krishna Themselves. It is the very worship of devotional service itself (satya satya bhakti yogera avatara).
Even if I may be the most fallen, pitiful, wretched and duplicitous person in the whole creation, I will defend the worship, name, and pastimes of my Prananath Nityananda from the scriptures till the end, as that is the only hope of my salvation, which is to beg kripa-siddhi in Gaura Radha Krishna Prema from Him in exchange for defending Him.
Srila Krishnadasa Kaviraja received this kripa-siddhi simply by defending Nityananda’s worship for a few hours in front of his pujari Gunarva Mishra who only had faith in Gauranga’s worship but not in Nityananda’s worship.
